Several activities are planned in and around UAB and the surrounding areas for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women. However, thanks to early detection, increased education and awareness, breast cancer death rates in women over 50 have been decreasing over the last several years. At this time, there are more than 3.1 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States.
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama has raised more than $6.75 million to support cutting-edge breast cancer research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center.
In honor of October’s being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the BCRFA and other local organizations are hosting many events in and around Birmingham.
Oct. 7: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is the largest series of 5K run/fitness walks in the world. The local race will begin at Regions Field in downtown Birmingham. Race-day registration and packet pickup will begin at 7 a.m. The survivor parade will be at 8 a.m., the 5K starts at 9 a.m., and the 1-mile fun run/walk is at 9:45 a.m., with awards ceremony at 10:15 a.m. Detailed information is online at http://komenncalabama.org/ .
Oct. 8: Pink Private Shopping Night, Belk at the Summit
From 6:30-9 p.m. A $25 ticket includes complimentary food and beverages, live entertainment, a Fashionably Pink: Day to Night fashion show, fabulous door prizes, and the opportunity to shop with special discounts at Belk. Oct. 11: Fundraising Day at Texas Roadhouse in Pelham
The Pelham location of Texas Roadhouse will donate 10 percent of all sales from 6-9 p.m. to BCRFA for breast cancer research in Alabama.
Oct. 12-27: Calera Goes Pink!
Join the City of Calera as they Go Pink! to support breast cancer research in Alabama. This citywide event kicks off with the Calera Middle School football game Friday, Oct. 12, a golf tournament at Timberline on Sunday, Oct. 22, and the Calera High School football game Friday, Oct. 27. Oct. 13: Jim ‘N Nick’s Angel Squad Breast Cancer Awareness Day
UAB’s Angel Squad members will be present in Jim ‘N Nick’s restaurants throughout the Birmingham area from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. to promote breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection with mammograms by distributing informational brochures, pink ribbons, bracelets and stickers throughout the day.
Oct. 13: Pink Luncheon Benefiting BCRFA
Make a minimum donation of $15 to BCRFA and enjoy a buffet, fun and prizes at the MSE Building Co. (5500 Derby Drive, Birmingham). RSVP at 205-833-9010.
Oct. 29: Charity Shopping Event at The Summit
From 1-4 p.m., there will be a charity shopping event at Kendra Scott, Kate Spade, Lilly Pulitzer and Lilly Rain at The Summit, with a percentage of sales from each store benefiting BCRFA.
