Stillman Golf Tournament raises scholarship funds for area students

Golfers from throughout the state competed recently in the 16th Annual Stillman College Golf Tournament, raising thousands to support scholarships for deserving students from the Birmingham-metro area enrolled at the college in Tuscaloosa.

The tournament was held on Sept. 30, at the Roebuck Golf Course. It attracted golfers and community leaders including SIAC Basketball Coach of the Year and Stillman Basketball Coach Donte Jackson, State. Sen. Rodger Smitherman, Jefferson County Commissioner George Bowman, Outstanding Female Triathlete Angelean Bibb, Stillman President Dr. Peter E. Millet, Lewis Investments President Dr. Jesse Lewis, Miles College Golf Coach Leonard Smoot, and NAHA Longest Drive Champion Chris Osborne.

Tournament winners in the male flight:

First Place – Altruist Credit Union with Alvin Washington, Eddie Smiley, Dr. Simpson Bery and Frankie Baggett.

Second Place – Dr. Jesse Lewis, Graham Jackson, Chris Osborne and Errol Watts.

Third Place – Sen. Rodger Smitherman, Glennon Bazzle, Gregory Jones and Michael Sullivan.

Tournament winners in the female flight:

First Place – Vernita Johnson, Linda Cunningham, Delisa Pope-Mitchell and Janie Davis.

Second Place – Angelean Bibb, Sheilia Goodwin and Gloria Dennard

Third Place – Earlie Simmons, Carole Johnson, Kim Braden and Tiffany Osborne.

Devin Crenshaw won the Longest Drive Male Award. Vernita Johnson won the Longest Drive Female Award. State Sen. Rodger Smitherman won the putting contest and Angelean Bibb made a surprise longest drive on the male designated hole.

Financial reports for the 2016 tournament still are being tallied. Last year the event raised $20,000 and provided 12 scholarships to area students Decorian Bivins, Victor Christian, Kaylyn Coleman, Breanna Cook, Camerin Cotton, T’Keyah Craig, Taneara Cunningham, Devin Harris, Sydney Hinton, Tikyla Maxwell, Jadea Roanoke and Deante Samuel
