Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. Thanks to early detection and improvements in treatment, millions of women are surviving the disease.
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama has raised more than $5.8 million to support cancer research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center. The BCRFA helps ensure physicians and scientists can seize every opportunity for groundbreaking discovery.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the BCRFA and other organizations are hosting local events.
September and October: Altar’d State Mission Mondays
During September and October, 10 percent of Altar’d State’s Monday proceeds will go directly to BCRFA to fund breast cancer research in Alabama. Head on over to Altar’d State at Brookwood Village on Mondays to shop and support
September and October: Jim ‘N Nick’s Fundraiser
The UAB Hospital Auxiliary Angel Squad is selling $10 Jim ‘N Nick’s gift cards. In exchange, Jim ‘N Nick’s has pledged to give 50 percent of these gift card sales back to the Angels. To buy gift cards, please contact the Angel Squad at uabangelsquad@gmail.com or call 205-801-8266.
Sept. 26-Oct. 1: Wrapped in Hope
Wrapsody, a gift shop in at Patton Creek in Hoover, has a new event called “Wrapped in Hope,” through which 10 percent of sales between Sept. 26 and Oct. 1 will to go the UAB Hospital Auxiliary Angel Squad.
Sept. 29 and Oct. 20: BCRFA’s Go Pink! T-shirt Sale
From 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sept. 29 and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 20, short-sleeved and long-sleeved T-shirts will be on sale by the elevators in the North Pavilion at UAB Hospital. Short-sleeved shirts are $15, and long-sleeved shirts are $20. Proceeds go to fund research and save lives.
October: Cahaba Brewing Goes Pink for BCRFA
During the entire month, stop by Cahaba Brewing Company anytime and support BCRFA. They will have a Belgium cherry beer specially brewed for the month, and special-edition pink and navy Cahaba Brewing T-shirts with a percentage of proceeds from both benefiting BCRFA.
October: Pink Ribbon Project
Dozens of fire stations across the state will Go Pink! throughout the month of October and will be selling specially designed Pink Ribbon Project T-shirts for $15 and $20. Proceeds from shirt sales will help the BCRFA provide seed dollars required to secure sustaining, national grants for breast cancer research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
October: Tameron Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign
Tameron Automotive Group will donate $100 in support of breast cancer research for every car sold during October at Tameron Honda (1675 Montgomery Highway, Birmingham) and Tameron Hyundai (1595 Montgomery Highway, Birmingham).
October: Brighton Collectibles Breast Cancer Awareness Jewelry Sale
During the month of October, each Brighton Collectibles location will donate proceeds raised from the sale of their breast cancer jewelry to the UAB Hospital Auxiliary Angel Squad. Brighton will also be setting up a table in the North Pavilion on Oct. 7 and 13 to take orders for breast cancer awareness jewelry.
Oct. 2: Revvin’ 4 Research Charity Motorcycle Ride
Join Heart of Dixie Harley Davidson for the eighth annual “Revvin’ 4 Research Charity Ride,” benefiting BCRFA. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. at Heart of Dixie Harley-Davidson in Pelham, with kickstands up at 1 p.m. The escorted ride will have an after-party with food and live music. Oct. 3: Fundraising Day at Full Moon BBQ Southside
The Southside location of Full Moon BBQ will be donating 25 percent of all sales between 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. to BCRFA for breast cancer research in Alabama. Full Moon will count ANYONE who comes in to the Southside location that day, including all dine-in, carry out and catering orders, to the Southside location for that day.
Oct. 7-23: Calera Goes Pink!
Join the City of Calera as they Go Pink to support breast cancer research in Alabama. This citywide event kicks off with the Calera High School football game on Friday, Oct. 7, and culminates with a golf tournament at Timberline on Oct. 23. Oct. 8: Uncorked! On the Green
The community is invited to come out to Ross Bridge (2101 Grand Ave., Hoover) for this free annual Uncorked! On the Green event to sample beers and wine, and make a donation to support BCRFA. Wine tasting is from noon-2 p.m. and beer sampling is from 2:30-5 p.m. Valid ID is required prior to sampling. Donations will be collected to help fund research and save lives.
Oct. 9: Pink Private Shopping Night, Belk at the Summit
From 6:30-9 p.m., BCRFA and Belk are once again partnering to host this exclusive private shopping night. A $25 ticket includes complimentary food and beverages, live entertainment, a Fashionably Pink: Day to Night fashion show, fabulous door prizes, and the opportunity to shop with special discounts at Belk. Oct. 13: Fundraising Day at Texas Roadhouse in Pelham
The Pelham location of Texas Roadhouse will be donating 10 percent of all sales from 5-9 p.m. to BCRFA for breast cancer research in Alabama. Show the event flier in person or on your mobile device
Oct. 14: Pink Luncheon Benefiting BCRFA
Make a minimum donation of $15 to BCRFA and enjoy a buffet, fun and prizes at the MSE Building Co. (5500 Derby Drive, Birmingham). RSVP at 205-833-9010
Oct. 14: Jim ‘N Nick’s Angel Squad Breast Cancer Awareness Day
Angel Squad members will be present in Jim ‘N Nick’s restaurants throughout the Birmingham area (as well as Cullman and Montgomery) to promote breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection with mammograms by distributing informational brochures and pink ribbons throughout the day.
Oct. 15: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is the largest series of 5K run/fitness walks in the world. The local race will begin at Linn Park in downtown Birmingham. Race day registration and packet pickup will begin at 7 a.m. The survivor parade will be at 8:20 a.m., the 5K starts at 9 a.m., and the 1-mile fun run/walk is at 10 a.m., with awards ceremony at 1:10 p.m. Detailed information is online.
Oct. 15: New Light Support Group
In lieu of the New Light Support Group meeting, members of the support group will participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Oct. 15, which will be held in Linn Park in downtown Birmingham.
