BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Birmingham City Council took a bold step on Tuesday, December 8, 2015. President Johnathan Austin restructured the Council’s committee assignments with the intent to build on past success while maximizing opportunities for policy improvements. In addition, President Austin also introduced a newly formed Governmental Affairs Committee to be chaired by Councilwoman Lashunda Scales.“I am humbled to be chosen by President Austin to chair this committee,” said Councilor Scales. “Serving citizens through public policy is the committee’s primary goal.”This committee, consisting of Councilor Scales, President Austin and Councilor Marcus Lundy, will be charged with developing legislative policies to enhance the city’s overall productivity while making a concerted effort to increase public participation through community outreach initiatives and technology. This committee also will fulfill the Council’s mandate to govern as the policy-setting and legislative branch of Birmingham city government.As chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee, Councilor Scales has a clear vision and an ambitious agenda. Preliminary issues include policies for the city’s budget process as well as a legislative agenda to present to state lawmakers’ in the spirit of partnership and support.The first meeting of the Governmental Affairs Committee is scheduled for January 11, 2016 – at 3 p.m. in Conference Rooms D and E.
