Attempted Murder Investigation
The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives have arrested and charged a suspect in connection with an attempted murder investigation. The incident occurred Saturday, June 6, 2015 in the 6800 Block of Joppa Avenue.
The suspect has been identified as:Devonte Yancey, B/M, 22, of Birmingham, Alabama. Three Attempted Murder warrants were obtained against the suspect. All three warrants have a $150,000 bond each. The suspect is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.
Our investigation revealed the suspect is the individual responsible for shooting into a patrol car occupied by two Birmingham Police Officers. On 6/6/2015, officers were responding to a call involving someone shooting in the area. Upon arrival, they were flagged down by a citizen. As officers sat in their patrol car speaking with the citizen, theofficers began receiving gunfire into their vehicle. The officers responded immediately by exiting their vehicle. Both the officers and citizen moved to the passenger side for cover. The officer’s patrol car was struck several times along with a shattered rear window. Thankfully, no one was injured.
The Birmingham Police Department was determined and committed to apprehending this ruthless individual that decided to try and kill a Birmingham Police Officer. In less than twelve hours the suspect was identified, charged, located and arrested.
