Idris Elba finally answered those wondering if he’s up to snuff to play the next James Bond. Buzz surrounding Elba slipping into the role started to re-surface once, leaked e-mails from Sony Pictures Entertainment Co-chairwoman Amy Pascal revealed she wants him as the next 007 once Daniel Craig is done portraying him in the hit movie franchise. For years, rumors started flying and fan support mounted in favor of the British actor to play the sexy secret agent, with Elba himself saying in a Reddit AMA a few months back he’d love taking on the job if given the chance.
Now, Elba has addressed the speculations on Saturday via Twitter remarking, Isn’t 007 supposed to handsome? Glad you think I’ve got a shot! Happy New year people.
Well played, sir! The rebuttal comes on the heels of Conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh losing his hair (what’s left of it anyways) over the thought of Elba playing Bond. According to Limbaugh’s logic, Elba simply can’t and shouldn’t play the iconic character because Bond is “white and Scottish.” Limbaugh stated:
James Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. He was white and Scottish. Period. That is who James Bond is. But now [they are] suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a Black Briton, rather than a white from Scotland. But that’s not who James Bond is. But that’s not who James Bond is and I know it’s racist to probably point this out.
Boy hush with that madness. The next Bond flick, Spectre is slated for release on Nov. 6, 2015 featuring Craig.
