Tyler Perry is busy promoting his upcoming new film, Gone Girl (he has a role in it, he’s not involved in behind-the-scenes production in case you didn’t know), starring Ben Affleck. While doing media rounds with the cast, Perry sat down with Extra TV’s Jerry Penacoli, who asked him questions about his other new role–as a father. During their chat, Perry might have accidentally revealed the sex of his child, but he also talked personally about how he wants to provide his son with the love he didn’t get from his own father figure as a child.
Jerry Penacoli: “Congratulations by the way.”
Tyler Perry: “Thank you! Thanks.”
Penacoli: “The pending…son? Do you know if it’s a son or a daughter? Child?”
Perry: “Well, we’re having a baby.”
Penacoli: “You don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl?”
Perry: “We’re having a baby. She and I are very excited.”
Penacoli: “You’re just glowing!”
Perry: “I’m happy. I’m happy. I’m really excited.”
Penacoli: “This is going to change your life.”
Perry: “It already has.”
Penacoli: “You’ve been very outspoken about your relationship with your dad, what kind of dad will you be?”
Perry: “You know, the greatest gift I’m being given right now is the opportunity to give the little boy in me everything I never had, so that’s what I’m excited about–this beautiful human being that God has allowed to come into my life for me to get to know. Because they come with their own personalities, who they are, to shepherd and usher him into whatever…I said him…into whatever the child is supposed to be is what I’m going to do.”
As we told you a few months back, Perry found out the man he thought was his father, Emmitt Perry Sr., who treated him so cruelly as a child, was actually not his father at all.
“I love my mother to death, but she lied to me.
Some of you have secrets that your kids need to know. Let the chips fall where they may. For the peace of that person, let them know.”
But back in May, Perry wrote a message on his website where he spoke about the type of father he hoped to be in the future. In that letter, he said that he his past pain makes him want to be the best father possible.
In my prayer and quiet time at 5am, I was praying about how to (one day) be the best father that I can be. I have no doubt that I will be a great dad, but as I looked back in my life for an example, all I could remember were all of the horrible things that were said and done to me as a kid. But before I could get sad about it, I remembered something I wrote a while back about “learning in reverse”.
If you are like me and had no good examples, then your lesson is in reverse. I learned many years ago that if I do the opposite of what was done and said to me then I have learned how to be a good father some day.
