NEW ORLEANS, La. – The 18th ranked Alabama State bowling team placed seventh with two wins in bracket play on Sunday, the final day of the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational at the AMF All Star Lanes.
The Hornets’ (7-5) entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed and fell to eighth-seeded Texas Southern, 4-1, in the best 4-of-7 baker matches to get things started. Alabama State then upended Alabama A&M, 4-2, to advance to the seventh place match against Texas Southern.
The Hornets’ proved to be better in that game and claimed a 4-0 win over the Tigers to place seventh and dropping Texas Southern down to eighth-place.
“Where it was a very disappointing weekend, we got a very good look at where we need to improve, both on and off the lanes, we have some areas that need work,” said Head Coach Andrew Chatmon. “The good news is that even though we did not perform to expectation we feel that when we do make the necessary corrections we will be fine.”
Stephen F. Austin freshman Stephanie Schwartz earned the MVP honors with a 241.6 average. The other four all-tournament team members included SFA’s Paige Kraushaar (221.4),Tulane’s Michelle Ng (215.2), Texas Southern’s Jelesa Maryland (210.0) and Bethune-Cookman’s Ivory Miles (208.4).
Third-ranked Sam Houston State claimed the title with a 4-3 win over ninth-ranked Stephen F. Austin in the championship match.
Alabama State will return to the lanes on Nov. 7-9 at the Valpo Crusader Classic in Merryville, Ind.
