SWACMONTGOMERY – The back-to-back SWAC Champion Alabama State women’s golf team will play in its third NCAA Tournament regional in four years in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Lady Hornets will play at the Southwood Golf Course, where they recently played and won the Florida A&M Invitational nearly one month ago. The NCAA Regional will be played May 8-10.
“I’m happy to finally see officially where we are going,” said head coach Dr. Gary Grandison. “We’ve really prepared for this course as much as we could so far. We still have more work to do.”
Alabama State set a scoring record on the course, and Dr. Grandison and his team know what to expect from the course.
“It’s a mixture of layouts and some undulating greens which they will make very fast,” Dr. Grandison said. “There are some open holes, there are tree-lined holes, so it’s a mixture of challenges we are gearing up for.”
Duke, South Carolina and Stanford are the three top-ranked teams in the region, along with in-state schools Auburn and Troy in the 24-team field.
“This is an elite field. This is the big dance of golf,” Dr. Grandison said. “We expect to compete against the top teams, and measure where we are and where we need to be. I really like this field. It has some top national teams, so we’ll prepare to go out and represent Alabama State University.”
