BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Members of Omicron Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. recently held a lock-in with its Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) group. Lock-in activities included Zumba dancing, swimming, and ice-breaker activities. The lock-in was held at the UAB Recreation Center.
EYL is a signature program of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated which focuses on the development of skills and talents girls in middle school with the potential for becoming leaders within their local communities and beyond. The program is designed to provide leadership development, civic engagement, enhanced academic preparation, and character building.
The middle school girls come from all over the Greater Birmingham Area and represent Birmingham City Schools, Fairfield City Schools, Gardendale Schools, Trussville City Schools, Vestavia Schools, Hoover City Schools, Alabaster City Schools, and Jefferson County Schools. “The lock-in was an opportunity to foster some of the core principles of our program in a fun environment,” said Marsha Savage, Chairman of the Emerging Young Leaders Committee.
Members of the EYL Committee are Jamie Dobbins, Co-chairman, Donna Turner, Delfreda Coleman, Fatima Carter, Ellise Washington, Linda Roberson, Chrystal Tolbert, Mamie Alexander, Demetrius Singleton, Sasha Willingham, Patricia Bowman, Theadora Fancher, Tineka Peoples, LaRonda Reese, Angela Day, Angelia Strode, Sarah Buie, Jana Williams, Dominique Lindsay, Stephanie Millsap, and Tonya Perry. Dr. Gwendolyn Tilghman serves as chapter president.
Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha has served the Birmingham area for 90 years. It also has the distinction of being the first graduate chapter to be chartered in the South Eastern Region. Collectively and individually, its 150 plus members volunteer and spend hundreds of hours impacting lives. Its scholarship programs have benefitted hundreds of students in the Greater Birmingham community. Omicron Omega has oversight of five college undergraduate chapters on various college and university campuses in the Birmingham area.
Alpha Kappa Alpha is an international service organization that was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. in 1908. It is the oldest Greek – lettered organization established by African- American college educated women.
