Alabama’s top high school culinary arts students competed in Birmingham at Culinard – the culinary institute of Virginia College – to earn top state awards on March 1st. Teams are made up of students enrolled in a culinary arts program at his or her high school. Wenonah’s Culinary Team has three members and from left to right Brianna Patterson, Mychala Redeaux, and Amber Parks are all a part of the Culinary Team.
Each team was judged on planning ( making time schedules, organizing the work area, obtaining needed supplies) and overall food production. Teams had to successfully prepare the following menu from scratch within the one-hour time frame:
Poached Salmon
Beurre Blanc
Roasted Potatoes
Ratatouille
Chocolate Bread Pudding with Strawberry
Compote
At the end of the one-hour period participants then present their completed dishes to a panel of top chefs in the Southeast. Wenonah was the Culinary Arts State 2nd Place Winner with a Gold Medal. Top competition winners will earn college scholarships.
Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a national organization devoted to preparing students for leadership and future career opportunities. Alabama has more than 7,000 members who enjoy the many benefits this organization offers.
