Following a thrilling triumph in the state basketball finals, the Wenonah High School Dragons girls had another eventful day on March 13, one filled with life lessons to balance athletic prowess.
Their day began with the Jefferson County Commission to receive a resolution in their honor that was sponsored by Sandra Little Brown. The team, Principal Regina Carr-Hope, and their coach Emanuel Bell went on to the chambers of Houston Brown, the Presiding Judge of Jefferson County. Judge Brown’s inspirational talk with the team emphasized excellence of character for them as future leaders, making wise choices, and the history and procedures of the courthouse.
Their next visit was to the drug court and Judge Shanta’ Owens. Principal Hope stated that the consequences of drug use and bad choices became clear to the students as Judge Owens spoke to them.
As a fitting conclusion, the team enjoyed lunch with George Sarris at the Fish Market. Sarris, a partner of the school’s Academy of Hospitality and Tourism, related to students the ins and outs of food service business behind the dining area. The students were excited that Mr. Sarris even offered assistance with employment opportunities.
