RoderickRoyal BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Roderick Royal, former Birmingham City Council president, will officially kick off his campaign for the Jefferson County Commission, District 1, on Thursday March 13, at 5:30 p.m. in the Green Room of the Phoenix Building, 1710 Second Ave. North. He will share his vision for the region and reveal the campaign’s WIN Plan, which stands for Winning Initiatives.
“It has been my pleasure to serve the people of the City of Birmingham over the last 12 years as a Councillor and former interim mayor,’’ said Royal. “If elected, I look forward to serving the citizens of District 1 by improving the county’s tax base, putting people back to work and addressing other county matters. This is only one portion in our WIN Plan.’’
“Today, we have the opportunity to render strong leadership and offer keen administrative skills to the residents of our county. I believe that my experience as a go-to-guy at the city will serve our residents well at this time of tight budgets, low tax revenue, a smaller workforce and increased user fees.’’
As a council member, Royal led an $11 million street resurfacing project of 100 miles, which was Birmingham’s largest street resurfacing effort. He also implemented a citywide drug prescription plan for senior citizens and a breakfast bar program for third graders in select Birmingham elementary schools.
Royal works in consumer banking and is a college instructor. He’s a former Fairfield police officer and holds political science and public administration degrees from Tuskegee University and Webster University. He is married with three children.
