Councilor Steven Hoyt showed his appreciation to volunteers and sponsors of the 8th Annual Party With a Purpose Neighborhood event this past Saturday at Miles College by hosting an elegant evening filled with awards. Topping the awards list were students from Wenonah and Ramsay High School who received scholarships totaling $3000 not to mention two laptops that were given to the $1000 award recipients, all sponsored by the Education With a Purpose sub-committee.
Education With a Purpose began in 2013 and has since gained ground as the focal point for engaging youth in the community to excel in their academics. Students qualify by submitting an application that is submitted to all Birmingham City Schools through their school counselors and provide a written essay on “How I Can Make A Positive Difference In My Community”, along with their transcripts.
Councilor Steven Hoyt launched Party With a Purpose in 2005 and it has since earned the Best Neighborhood Program Award in 2011 from the Neighborhoods USA conference. Each year thousands of neighborhood citizens attend along with hundreds of community volunteers adding to the events’ success.
